As well as learning all the subjects necessary for a monk’s life which include Tibetan, the memorization of Buddhist texts and rituals, the young monks also learn a variety of other subjects and tasks: the proper care of the shrine and participation in the daily and special pujas and rituals. They learn to play the musical instruments for puja as well as their studies of English and proper behavior in the various rituals. The young monks as well are examined from time to time to grade their progress in various subjects. Exercise is very important and the young monks take full advantage of the playground during their day off and even on occasion celebrate various birthdays.
