Q: Can you please suggest some books about beliefs and practices of Tibetan Buddhism for beginners?
A: I think the first book is the history of Lord Buddha, undoubtedly. And the second book that I recommend is Milarepa’s history.
Many people they think that” Oh, I want practice Tibetan Buddhism”, and they think that Tibetan Buddhism is so far away from the Lord Buddha as teaching in Nalanda. Therefore, reading books and teachings directly from the Lord Buddha as much as possible.
And then the second book that is very much needed is Milarepa’s book. Because if you look at the other great masters’ history. Some of them are very much political, and some of them are very much powerful, some of them have different appearances in different time. But Milarepa doesn’t have any of that. He has himself and he has the practice. And then he shows what is the meaning of having a guru and what is the example of being a student and how much you have to dedicate if you can.
At last, there is one thing we have to keep in mind, that our Dharma practice comes from the Lord Buddha, Buddha Sakyamuni.
With love and respect from your Kalu Rinpoche
