Kalu Rinpoche | Niguma Long Life Empowerment – to think on the broader side (Part 5)

So therefore, the example is very clear again by His Holiness Dalai Lama. He interacts with, starting with many different religious figures, different cultures. If he chooses to be very traditional, he has all the capacity and the necessity to do it, but he chooses not to. Not because he can’t, he can do the most ancient traditional culture if he wants to, but he doesn’t see that it is having a strong impact, to the full potential of the Buddhist teaching.

That is why his teaching is very much formulated as “Oh, Buddhist teaching has to be approached with a scientific value, ethical value and then also with your own dedication with love and compassion and wisdom practice”. These are all universal language, right? There is no cultural barrier when it comes to that. The science has no cultural barrier. I mean depends on which science group backed up by which government [haha]. Not every scientifical science, it depends on what kind of science, supported by whom, what narrative, what point of view, so that’s that, there is a lot of agendas.

But in general, science, intellectual way of thinking, understanding, and then followed by ethical point of view, followed by wisdom and compassion, all these 3 is the universal language. There is no such thing as “my country, your country, my neighbour, your neighbour”, it is a universal language.

Then when you teach Buddhist teaching and Buddhist quality through this channel, there is almost no one who doesn’t understand, everybody understands. But they also has to carry on with the person who has a little bit of quality. You cannot mimic the Dalai Lama [haha], you cannot play the character of Dalai Lama, in order to help other people. In order to implement these 3 visions you also need to have a little bit of inner quality.

It is like people who want to achieve many things, who want to pretend many things, then when you don’t have inner quality, even in your ordinary life you don’t reach very far. You can mimic other people’a lifestyle, you can mimic what other people say, what other people do, what other people wear, but when you don’t have a little bit of inner quality, you don’t reach very far, whether it is politics, whether it is business, whatever it is.

So if you want to really benefit yourself, liberate yourself, you also have to think on the broader side. And that’s what you call “jang chub kyi sem”. “jang chub kyi sem” means not just taking in oneself but having a broader perspective. You do not need to feel love all the time, 24/7, you do not need to feel a compassion 24/7, then I think you will go insane, especially at the beginning stage. But at least Bodhicitta is a great path and a method to think vastly, so that is at least at the initial step.
