Many Buddhist traditions in the Himalayan region, people will tend to have this idea “I am Nyingma, I am Sakya, I am Kagyu, I am Shangpa or Jonang and so on and so forth”. It was a very practical point of view in that time because everybody was living quite far away from each other, so it was very normal to be proud of your own province, proud of your own culture and your own traditions. But now, as our world is more interconnected and then the Dharma and the teachings of the Lord Buddha is now a universal truth, there is no such thing as a Guru Rinpoche’s version of happiness or Green Tara’s version of happiness or Buddha Maitreya’s version of happiness, and there are no different distinctions made about happiness and enlightenment.
Then the example of His Holiness Dalai Lama, our present great Buddhist teacher, a Buddhist monk, Vajrayana master, all combined. We do not have to look very far for an example and if we look to him, we can see that he has received teachings from many great different masters, from Nyingma masters, Sakya masters, Gelug Masters, including the previous Kalu Rinpoche and so on. So therefore that is an example of a modern spiritual figure or the spiritual path. So that’s that, so I am not trying to invent something new.
That is something very important to keep in mind, in general. Because in our world that we live in, it is very difficult to find the great master all of a sudden, overnight. So therefore we have to focus on the Dharma first, the teachings of the Lord Buddha, and then that discovery of the great master will appear overtime, but you do not need bring this to a quick conclusion.
Just to give you the perspective, in that what you have right now, the time that we live in, you have much more to chew on than what you can digest. I do not know how to explain that in a nice story. Because if you look at Khungpo Lotsawa [Khungpo Naldjor], Marpa Lotsawa, they sell their own land, their own property, argue with their own family, just so that they could go to India, to Nepal, to receive teachings, funded by themselves, to bring the teachings back to Tibet. We have everything in our hands. So what I am trying to say is that we have much more that what we can digest. Then what time we spend in terms of doing research, in terms of the Vajrayana teachings in one hour, they spent all their life gathering that. Then they handed it all over to their students and practitioners. For us to show a little bit of appreciation is good!
