Kalu Rinpoche | Perfection of Patience

Many individuals have such high expectations for themselves. They have high expectations in the samsaric world and they get disappointed. They then shift to dharma and have high expectations in dharma where the progress is very small then they also get disappointed. That is why I think that patience is very important. We can talk about the Six Perfections that are found in all the great Mahasiddhas as explained in the texts. For us to have a basic understanding to begin with, the Perfection of Patience is necessary. We say that developping the Perfections is important and necessary but the Perfection of Patience and understanding comes down to how much you have understood reality.

The Perfection of Patience does not come just because you want it to. The Perfection of Patience is the realization of the nature of mind. It is not some kind of a low category or level. It is not an object that you can grab and grasp and just put it into your mind. It is not. In order to obtain patience in your mind, you have to see samsara as it is. When you see samsara as it is, your illusion kind of breaks down and then your kindness and compassion arises enormously in wanting to benefit others. When you have wisdom combined with that then there is the Perfection of Patience. Without wisdom there is no Perfection of Patience.
