Kalu Rinpoche | Stages in the Path of Illusion | Lesson 3 (Part 3)

And then, Taranatha is saying that different methods, different traditions have different ways of initiating themselves. Such as some of the great masters of all different methods, tend to go in the direction start with impermanence, or start with a renunciation of the Samsara, or examining the cause of suffering, the reality of the suffering, and then some is focusing prioritizing the karma. So different masters, different traditions tend to have different ways of starting things. But he is saying it doesn’t matter, because at the end it reaches to the same destination. It is the one conclusion. So, it doesn’t matter how you start.

So now, in terms of our current method, is the preciousness of human life.

First is the preciousness of human life. Second is the impermanence of life. Third is suffering of samsara and the fourth is the karmic existence.

So, you make a prayer to the refuge, to the Buddha Dharma Sangha. And then after this, and then you make a prostration from the bottom of the heart physically if we can. And the reason why I like this very particular teaching is because it is very much focused into the method of Mahayana. And it is a Mahayana path. And I think it is very important for all of us. Because all of us we think that Tantrayana is something like a highway to the enlightenment, but we cannot reach the highway without any sort of foundation, you know. So, we need to have a foundation. Therefore some sort of foundation with Mahayana principle and then reaching to Tantrayana as well. And these are very important thing that we have to keep in mind.

So, now, when to the second session, right? So, if you want to use this as a second session for yourself, then what you do is,

You make a prayer to the Buddha Dharma Sangha to all the Buddhas and bodhisattvas and Dakas and Dakinies, and then also making a Bodhicitta prayers, so, the preliminary prayer with offering mandalas. Everything goes the same.

Okay, so, to remind ourselves that life is precious, life is precious, life is precious, you know, to remind ourselves for a short period of time, it’s very important.

Like an example,

So, these are eight unfortunate circumstances. So, the eight unfortunate circumstances are,

The hell ,being born in the hell realm.

Means the hunger ghost realm.

Animal realm.

Means the ignorant realm.

Means the gods and the goddess who live so long until their accumulation is finished and then they realize their panic. And then it’s too late to do anything.

Means the one who has opposite view of the Lord Buddha’s teaching, no matter the logical explanation. So, ལོག་ལྟ་ does not mean that you have a different opinion. You can have a different opinion. But even the logic is presented and then you are in denial of that. Not just a genuine explanation, but even a logical explanation, scientific explanation. It is fully denied, 100 percent. So, that is called the opposite view. ལོག་ལྟ་ means the one who has an opposite opinion, in complete denial.

Means that in a time that you are born without the era of the Buddha Shakyamuni or being born in the time that there was no Buddha, let’s put it like this. Like an example, there is 1000 Buddha, right? And then the most important is that there are some Buddhas, who will have a lot of activities, a lot of teachings. And then there are some Buddhas who will not even teach. And then there are Buddhas that they do teach, but they will never teach Tantrayana. You understand?

So, right now, our Buddha Shakyamuni era is very special and unique, because he gave teaching. And not just teaching, but he gave teachings about Theravada and then he gave teaching about the Mahayana. He gave teachings about Tantrayana. So, therefore, we are fortunate. And we are still in the era of the Buddha Shakyamuni. You know, that is very much alive, the lineage, the blessings. So, therefore we are fortunate by that reason.

ལྐུགས་པ་ means just completely ignorant person. It doesn’t mean a disabled person, okay? So, there’s a difference. Because I think sometime with the translation ལྐུགས་པ་means, you know, like a disabled, if you misunderstand. ལྐུགས་པ་ means ignorant, just pure ignorant. Because when you say a disabled, and that is have no potential to practice dharma. That is incorrect. Because there are people who have disable with leg, but they can still do the prayer, they can still read, and they are smarter than any other human being. They can do the work of 100 people. Like an example, the one who died, Stephen Hawking. He cannot speak, like us. But, you know, he speaks for all of us.

So, like that. So, you cannot say the disabled is ignorant person. You have to say ignorant person. So, like there can be individual who are completely ignorant, not necessarily a disabled. Like an example, if an individual is a very, very, very, very, very, very arrogant, this is ignorant. That is not disabled, you know. So, I think that’s something we have to think about it. And we should not look down on other people. That’s the thing. Whether it’s about the race, whether it’s a culture, whether it’s their skin color, doesn’t matter, just to treat everybody respectfully as we can. Whether you’re Buddhist or not, this really doesn’t matter.

So these are the eight circumstances that are unable to practice Dharma.

So, it’s saying that if you are born in all these hell realm and animal realm, and hunger ghost realm, obviously, it’s not a choice. Of course, that explanation will come later on about the hell. But I will explain to you right now, so that you can understand what I’m trying to say, the reason why it is unfortunate.

Like an example, in the hell realm. There’s a different degree of hell around. Just like in heaven, there’s a degree of heaven. So, when we think about the gods and the goddess, you know, we think that everybody is happy, and nobody is miserable. But in the reality, in this explanation in Lamrim, one thing I like about it is that, it says that some of them lives in the palace and have entourage. And some of them have one single fruit, and nothing else. And they’re not welcome to the Club. You understand what I mean? Little bit like outcasts, even in the heaven, you know. So, all they have is a one piece of fruit and nothing else, and they’re not really attractive, and they’re not really attracting anybody else. They are in the heaven, they are happier than human, but not fully happy or center of attention, like other gods.

So, there’s a lot of comparison within the gods, just like within our society. So, that’s the upper level, let’s say, you know. But also due to that, they can’t practice Dharma, because the distraction is so immense, and they can’t practice Dharma.

The hell realm, there’s also a lot of degree. Like an example, ཡང་བསད།means killing again, you know. Even the name is so disappointing. ཡང་བསད། means killing again. You know, like an example. They put your body lying down and then they cut your body again and again, again and again again and again, until you’re completely passed out with immense suffering. And then there’s a little bit of gap in between, like maybe one two second. And then again, all of a sudden, you’re reborn in exactly the same circumstance. You’re laying down again, and again your body is being saw, you know, by the tools. And then also, there’s other hell realm, that where you see a beautiful house, beautiful, beautiful house, and you run towards the house with absolutely no control. And then the moment you reach inside the house, the house becomes a metal house, and becomes a pure infernal, pure fire. And then again, a few seconds later, you are reborned.

So now, the lowest degree of the hell realm is there’s almost no gap. So, like, in hell realm, like in the beginning, there’s a gap, you know. The suffering is same. But there’s a few seconds gap, between their reborn and then process of dying, and being reborn, there’s a few seconds of gap. But as the level goes down, down, down, down, down, the gap goes shorter and shorter, the time goes longer and longer. And then on the bottom of the hell realm, there’s absolutely no gap. There is just continuously suffering all the time, every time, with no gap. So, you can understand why it is not possible.

And the human realm is not that great. Not that bad, not that bad. And therefore, we say it’s fortunate also. That’s one of the reasons we say it’s fortunate. The second reason that we say that we are fortunate is because we are born in the era of the Buddha Shakyamuni, that we can learn Dharma, we can practice, the potential to be enlightened, and not to go backward again and again.

So, when we say we are fortunate, it does not mean that you are certified to be happy all the time. You’re fortunate because it’s not good as heaven, it is not bad as hell, somewhere in the between. Therefore, you’re fortunate. That’s one of the reasons to call yourself you’re fortunate. The second reason is Buddha Shakyamuni and so on, you know, the teachings of the Buddha, era of Buddha Shakyamuni.

Okay, so now I give you a brief explanation, a little bit like I’m spoiling the movie. The movie is about to release and then I was explaining what is about to come. I’m sorry about that.

Like an example, in Heaven’s realm, like,

It’s, there’s a heaven that is very much attached to what they want to hear, what they want to think, based on their wish-fulfilling trees and then fulfilling their desires and so on. That god and goddess realm. And then there’s also a God Realm, that almost physically non-existence but they are crazy about emptiness or some sort of dullness. You know, little bit like people who take us very strong substance, you know. They really go mad, not necessarily they’re going outside in the street, naked and screaming. But they just go mad in their own mind. So, in some Gods realm, the higher Gods where the physicality is not so important, but rather their own consciousness, their own mind is just exploded, and almost like craziness into nothingness, complete chaos, let’s put it like this.

So, all these are vulnerable to go backwards into the realm of suffering, okay? Yeah. It’s just a time difference. Like the gods lifespan is longer than the human lifespan, but the lifespan in the hell is longer than the gods lifespan. And the lower the hell realm goes, the longer the lifespan goes within that. So, everything is multiplied. Everything is multiplied by seven times.

And then we are very fortunate because we are not born in the ignorant land where there is no teachings of the Lord Buddha. So, we are fortunate that we are in the place where has the teachings of the Buddha.

Okay, this is something I already explained about fortunate.

And then like an example.

And then there are other few positive things, but the most important positive things is, we have not done something immense negativity to others and to oneself, at least in this life. So, at the same time, we have a sense of joy when you practice the Lord Buddha’s teachings. And that is a good potential. That is a good quality.

In our era, the Buddha has appeared and arrived and taught. And you know, the Dharma, the teaching is still intact nowadays.

So, like an example, as being Buddhist, nowadays, people are generous, people are supportive when you are seen as a Buddhist. So, it is not a bad time at all. Let’s put it like this, simple.

So therefore, by collecting all this circumstance and ideas in your mind, and telling yourself it is really really really fortunate, I’m really fortunate, really fortunate, you know, like genuinely from the bottom of the heart. It’s very important to think in that direction.

So basically, you are trying to brainwash yourself. In our society, we brainwash ourselves in a different direction. So, in spirituality, we brainwash from the opposite direction. But you will still not lose your mind. So don’t worry about that. You will be more clear than before, in how you see your life and how you see the sufferings and so on.

So, at the end of these few talks that you’ve been thinking in your mind, and then at the end of the session, you make a dedication. And the session, you don’t have to make it very long. You can do half an hour. You start with a refuge and bodhicitta and then thinking about these things in your mind again and again. And then at the end, you make the dedication from the bottom of heart. So that’s that.

And the dedication doesn’t have to be a text that is clearly written. You can make dedication be as simple as ‘I dedicate all these positive thoughts that I have in my mind to all the sentient beings, to all the sentient beings, to all the sentient beings. ’And that is a dedication.

And like an example, like the refuge to the Buddha, right? ‘ I make a prayer to the Buddha, Dharma, Sangha. I’m not looking for the worldly things. I’m looking for the enlightenment path. Bless me, guide me, protect me. Bless me, guide me, protect me. Bless me, guide me, protect me. So that I can bring the Dharma into my life and to others people’s lives. ‘ And that can be a refuge and bodhicitta as well, you know.

So, it doesn’t have to be based on the text you know. So, you can just sit on the train, you can sit into the bus, you can drive a car, or flying. You can just think about these, you know. You don’t have to bring texts in the front of you. You can practice anywhere.

That’s the second chapter.

So, basically, it’s saying, the sentient beings, generally sentient beings, those who are in the hell and suffering around and those who are in the heaven realm, it’s beyond comparison. The amount of the sentient beings and the amount of human beings are beyond comparison. And the human beings that are connected with the Dharma is so rare that you can count. The opposite that you can’t count. It’s something like that.

So of course, there are many people who practice Dharma, who practice
accumulation of positivity. There are many people who practice the accumulation of positivity, having loving kindness, compassion, trying to help others, trying to help our communities, whether it’s our own people, whether it’s the neighbors, whether the family members, trying to be there. So, these are all positive action. These are positive, genuine one.

But even comparison from that to the practitioner, so the practitioner is even less than that. There’s even less people who practice Dharma, compared to that.

Even those who practice, who can uphold the sense of discipline, is even rarer. So therefore, to be born again, as a human being, is rare. You know, ཚུལ་ཁྲིམས་(Tsultrim)means the right action, the discipline. So the discipline is not a mind with the cage, but rather mind without cage. And that’s how we should view the Buddha’s discipline. It’s free. It’s not a military discipline.

Like an example, when we think about the word of discipline, we think about following the rules, rules of this and rules of that. Like you go to the office, you have rules to follow. You join the army, you have rules to follow. You become a husband, you become a wife, there are rules to follow. So, there are so many rules. But the Buddhist version of discipline is, there is no rule, but rather, having a deep understanding about life, and the cycle of suffering. Based on that understanding, you make the rule. How you make the rule? You make the rule based on the awareness of your mind. That’s how you make the rule. You don’t make a rule because somebody tells you to follow it and do it. You make the rule based on how many things you have counted by continuing your awareness of the mind. That is a Buddhist rule.

So, therefore, we must cherish it because due to our previous accumulation, we are born as human. Not just that, and meeting with the Dharma.

If you have a difficult understanding of what is the discipline of the Buddhism, of what I just explained to you, you know, it’s like this one, if I just tried to put our ordinary worldly life example. If you are happy, you are attractive. If you are unhappy, you are not attracted. If you have a peaceful mind, not necessarily a Buddhist human being, but rather, understood to have some sort of a clear understanding experience of life, you are attractive. If you don’t have experience of life, or don’t have some sort of clarity, no matter how much you try to look attractive, you are not. You are empty vast.

So, the discipline, the Buddhist discipline goes like this. So when we bring a good balance in this life, there is a chain reaction that appears in the next life. But more long-term perspective that’s pretty like this.

You know like some people when you meet them in the street or you see them in the street, they look very attractive with so many beautiful clothes and everything. So, you think that ‘Wow, this person is very attractive. ‘ And when they open their mouth, and then you don’t want to listen. It’s like that a little bit. Some people get so attractive and they’re very good in how they appear and everything very successful. But when they open their mouth, you want to close your ear. But that’s in our limited understanding. When you have the qualities of mind and there’s natural beauty that arises by itself. You know, the discipline, the Tsultrim, the right action, the right discipline, awareness, is similar to that, but much more broader.

So, that’s the third cycle.

Now the fourth cycle is about trying to make your life meaningful as possible. So, therefore, to lead a meaningful life, you need to have awareness in mind. It’s very simple. You cannot make a meaningful by copying other people’s life. You make a meaningful life based on the awareness of the mind. So, in this one it says, ‘ I want to lead a meaningful life because the so called this spiritual, the realization or the Buddhahood. And then I must not let any obstacles lock me in between. I have this fortunate circumstance and all the favorable circumstances is on my side. And I must utilize this in my progress. So, therefore, I must really make the life meaningful. ‘

So, it is very sad if we let go of this fortunate event.

So, if you don’t utilize this meaning of life, in a proper or genuine way, and there’s no such meaningless than that.

So it’s a little bit like fooling yourself. If you don’t have a genuine approach.

Like an example, you go to the treasure island and then you come back with the empty hand.

So, in the past, many of the fortunate event has been passed right through my fingertips. So therefore, I must utilize it for my full advantage to practice Dharma from this moment.

If you find that attraction in the ordinary life, and then you should try to understand and think that you’re leading to a much more important than this one singular life.

The spiritual step, the first step is, recognize and acknowledge that life is precious, and I must utilize in my full advantage.

That’s the fourth cycle.

Now I will read one more cycle and then I think we will do thee question and answer.

So, now, the current chapter right now is about thinking about the death, the impermanence and the death. So the first thing is, everything is not absent from the death.

Nobody can escape this.

And friends of friend, friend of friend, you know, we know who have passed.

And think about this. It says, just think like that everybody who have walked on this earth, has passed. Everybody who has walked on this earth in the past, in the human history, they also have died.

And then those who are also present in this very moment, also bound to the death. So therefore, from this moment on, I must really make the time meaningful as possible.

And I must tell you something here, because this sounds very depressing, you know. Everything, there is a birth, and there is a death, and your friend, they must died, your families, your relatives, your husband, is bound to death. It is so depressing. And I completely understand that. I acknowledge that.

So therefore, you must practice first, again and again. And then to really reflect these things, and to truly in your heart, can come later.

So, don’t try to pretend something you don’t understand fully, that’s more harmful than not understand it. So if you don’t understand, if you don’t want to understand temporarily, don’t try to admit, don’t try to accept, then that’s like lying to yourself. As long as you can start with one of them, then it’s good enough.

You know, you can start with, maybe the life is very precious, right? Or you can start with the life is impermanent. Or you can say the reality of the suffering and samsara. Or you can go to the idea of the karma.

So, you don’t have to accept all four keys. We can just accept one of them. And you just continue with your practice, with a non-sectarian view. And then the rest of the three, will come by itself. Because at the end, it’s all interrelated.

So, you don’t have to push yourself to pretend something that you did not understand fully. Take your time, but not too long, not too long. Take your time, but not too long.

And then from moment to moment, we are nearing to the death.

The fifth cycle is basically telling yourself the life is very impermanent, and it’s very precious and it’s very fragile. And, you know, whether you denial or whether you accept, the death is bound to come. So instead of just escaping myself from the reality, I must be resilient, and be courage to move on with the spiritual method and practice.

And that’s the fifth cycle.

So, we have stopped here, at the page 463. Okay. So, to all my Dharma sisters and brothers, please keep this page number in mind. 463 is where we stopped this time.

And like I said before, this is a very beautiful teaching, you know, all the very detail guidelines. And then at the end of the Lamrim teaching, then there’s the teachings about the nature of the mind as well. So, I find that very helpful to all the beginners as well as advanced practitioners.
