Kalu Rinpoche | The Inner meaning of Guru Yoga

Q: Dear Rinpoche, can you explain what is the inner meaning of guru yoga?

A: The inner meaning of guru yoga practice is that… there’s a few things, of course…If we read it in a very traditional way, and then of course, we have to say that ‘Oh, my guru, his kindness and my gratitude towards him should be much more beyond comparison to the Buddha Shakyamuni’ and we have all this kind of explanation. But the true meaning of the inner meaning of guru yoga is that finding a growth within yourself with a sense of humbleness, with a sense of wisdom combined together. That is the inner meaning of guru yoga.

The meaning of the guru yoga is not about achieving a magic. It’s not about being superstitious, it’s not about becoming a powerful, it’s not about getting some kind of a magical blessing from somewhere in the sky. The meaning of the guru yoga means how to remain humble with a sense of humbleness, and yet at the same time, fully awaken with gentleness and kindness towards others. And that is the inner meaning of a guru yoga. It has not so much to do with the magical sign. It’s more to do with the remaining with a sense of humbleness and having a constant reflection to yourself.

Because when you have a constant reflection to yourself, when you are individual that has the realization of the reality and then you are disciplined by itself. And then gradually, when you meditate and then the state of mind of your guru and the state of mind of yourself is inseparably together.

With love and respect from your Kalu Rinpoche
