Kalu Rinpoche | The master will come to you

Q: Rinpoche, I don’t have a master now, could you be my master? What should I do as my first step? Any daily practice should I do?

A: Okay, first of all, I cannot be your master, that’s number one. Why? Because I’m not a property that you can choose and collect. You know? So I’m not one of your collection. Okay, so that’s number one. I’m not trying to be disrespectful, I’m just trying to be honest with you.

If you abandon this idea of “I don’t have a master”, or “now I have a master”, if you abandon that idea, you can find many masters. Naturally, you know?

Because the most important is that you keep your mind pure, and virtuous, and then learn the Dharma in the Mahayana steps, that’s the most important. And then read some sutras and then also practice Chenrezig. Keep your steps simple as possible. That’s the first important step.

The second is that I cannot be your master, because if you let go of the “this is my master”, “this is not my master”, “this is my master”, “that is not my master”, if you let go of that, then everything is more beautiful. You understand? The more you hold into the idea of “oh this is my master, that is not my master” then your mind is not free. You know? So that’s that.

Learn the Dharma first and then the master will come to you. That’s what I said, always, all the time.
