Kalu Rinpoche | Vajradhara Ling 2024 (2) – a great teacher sounds like that

Then also, to attach to this story, in the Vajrayana world we say “Oh you criticise, you said this, you said that and then now you have broken your samaya”. Have you heard that line before? “Oh I am your Guru and then now you said this, then that, you have broken your samaya”, some kind like an oath. I think that is misconception.

Like an example, Rechungpa didn’t listen, still did what he wanted to do, still made Milarepa upset afterwards. Yet Rechungpa regretted afterwards and then he dedicated himself to the Dharma even more than before. And Milarepa gave more teachings, more guidance and Rechungpa became enlightened, highly a realized being, eventually.

What I am trying to say is that anybody who says that “you have broken your samaya” don’t listen! Everybody breaks samaya, everybody breaks the vows here and there. It is just sometime there is no witness. [haha] There is no witness so therefore you didn’t break anything. [haha] I’m sorry. [haha]

Like an example, my Guru Situ Rinpoche, Situ Rinpoche, 13, 14 years ago, when I was just starting my responsibility and then I said “Rinpoche, I am trying my best but I made a mistake here and there and so on”. And then Rinpoche said to me “you know, in the past has been ugly and beautiful throughout the human history, Buddhist history whatever, presently is ugly and beautiful, in the future it will be ugly and beautiful, nothing will change”. That’s number 1 advice. So it opened my eyes in a realistic perspective.

Then the 2nd is, he said “You do good I support you, you do bad I support you”. [haha]It will be difficult but I support you”. [haha] Oh that’s great, so I have a ‘no limit’ card. [haha]

What I am trying to say is a great teacher sounds like that, bad teacher sounds like “you break samaya, now you are out or you are bad”, like that. Then that shows you are not a Buddhist, you are not a Buddhist surrounding and so on.
