Kalu Rinpoche is Tibetan. He was born on September 17, 1990, in Darjeeling in India.
At 18 months of age, we filmed him for the first time as he was about to be recognised by the Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of the great Tibetan master whose name he bears. From that time on, we have been at his side for each of the major events in his life as a future spiritual master.
At the age of 14, young Kalu is preparing himself for a retreat of three years and nine months at the Mirik monastery. At the end of this long period of solitude, he will have received all the teachings of his lineage; he will officially have become an adult and a “lama”.
In Tibetan Buddhism, reincarnation is a real phenomenon, and a lama is regarded as the manifestation of the same person who returns endlessly to the world to carry on his teachings and, in so doing, to help others.
These lineages of masters have continued uninterrupted since the 12th Century.
These children known as “tulkus” are not considered demigods in any way, but rather symbols of the human ideal. They represent the conscience of spiritual Tibet; they exist to transmit knowledge which would otherwise disappear.
