Kalu Rinpoche | The reality of samsara

Q:

In HongKong teachings you have said that the reality of samsara must be recognized. Why?

A:

Because many Dharma practitioners think that realizing means only through intellectually. Of course intellectually is important and necessary to know it. But to believe it from the bottom of the heart can really improve our Dharma understanding.

If we look at the history of Milarepa time, or Khyungpo Naljor time, during that time there are so many great practitioners and believers towards the Buddha Dharma, but many of them they have never become the greatest master in the history. Because they never focus into the reality of samsara.

If you look at the history of Milarepa, he had recognized the meaning of samsara and the reality of samsara not only intellectually but also from the bottom of his heart. So that, in his single life time, he improved with such a great quality in mind, and became an enlightened master.

And Khyungpo Naljor, when he was in Bodhgaya, 1,000 years ago, he said to his guru master, that “I’m not afraid of dying. I’m afraid of what is there after the death, and the cycle of suffering again and again.”

So examples like that must be studied by us not only intellectually, but also believing it. Not just telling yourself that “I believe” or “I want to believe.” but believing it more than 100%. And then at the same time practicing the Dharma.

Because many people when they think about the samsara, when they come to Buddha Dharma, they think about samsara a little bit like a picnic, once in a while that they think about it and then they leave it behind. In fact it should not be like that. You have to think about it all the time.

With love and respect from Kalu Rinpoche
