Kalu Rinpoche | A genuine connection with a master (Part 1)

Q: How do I know if I made a genuine connection with a master or if it is my own make-belief?

A: I think everything is our make-belief. There’s no such as, a state of mind that is not out of belief, and then the state of belief. Everything is out of our own make-belief.

And then also, the connection, the definition of connection that I think we have to understand very carefully. Because many people when they hear a master who gives a very good teaching, and very good personality, and very comfortable and basically, who brings you to a very comfort zone, that is not a connection. That is at best, you somehow have stumbled into a situation where you happen to meet a good friend, I would say. It’s not a master.

The master, or instructor, have to be someone who has to give you the truth, not a bubble. If there’s a comfort level that you are looking for, then you have a misunderstanding, what is the definition of connection.

Because many people they have this perception – just like in our life, “Oh, I want to have that kind of a job, I want to have that kind of a partner, I want to have that kind of a house, I want to have that kind of a project, I want to have that kind of a thing“. So we have so many different perception, our ideas, make-belief.

Then somehow when we meet some kind of a good master and then we implement that expectation into our external perspective and then we say, “Oh yeah, that is what I want to see, and I don’t want to go out of that bubble, and I don’t want to leave that bubble, and I just want to be around that“. And it’s a little bit like, “I just want to be comfortable“. Being comfortable is not, that does not define that you have a genuine connection to the instructor. I would put it that way.
