Kalu Rinpoche | How to help others

Q: How can just a regular person help to others?

A: If you think that you want to help other people in a very religious way, of course lightening some candles, making a prayer, dedication. But if you really want to give a strong impact on other people, then participating in some kind of small project of environment issues. Not too much, not too little, but just small enough to contribute. Because I also want you to continue helping people, but it doesn’t mean that I want you to sacrifice your whole life for the project or to that direction, and then at the end yourself getting hurt or being harmed and lost. So, contributing yourself in a part of the environmental project, bit by bit. That is good in the realistic way.

Q: Is helping others a practice?

A: Not really. Helping others is not really a practice. Helping others is of course bringing changes and positive benefits. But I think we have to be patient with our wisdom, as long as possible and continuity with our devotion and commitment. And helping other people will come itself, without using any force, without using any strength by yourself. As you can understand, the opposite of hatred is compassion, kindness. And the kindness to your family, to your loved ones, you don’t need to put any kind of strength because your realization and understanding state of mind is there. So, just like that, when you want to help other people, be patient. There are countless sentient beings. At first you must develop yourself. Because sometimes by helping others, because you don’t have the stability of your state of emotions, you also can get lost.

So therefore, try to put yourself temporarily importance by practicing the dharma. And once you have established that, then you can help countless sentient beings just like the Buddha. So that is my opinion and the opinion of the bodhisattvas as well.

With love and respect from your Kalu Rinpoche
